There's nothing like the feeling of being pampered, and having a facial is one of the best ways to indulge. But is a facial a luxury or something we should make a part of our regular routine in order to keep skin glowing?

A facial is a treatment which is customised to each client's skin condition or concern. Generally speaking a facial will include a skin assessment, a cleanse, some form of exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, massage for stimulation and drainage, something to assist with breakouts and something to aid hydration and smoothing of the skin.

Plastic surgeon and skincare expert, Dr Ahn Nguyen said regular facial treatments were important for skin because they encouraged cell turnover, which helps skin to rejuvenate itself. "Your cells normally turn over every 30 days but as we get older this process slows down, leaving the skin looking dull, uneven, rough to touch and your makeup doesn't sit right," she said.

So how often should you have a facial? Dr Nguyen says once a month is sufficient. "By having monthly treatments not only will they keep your skin free from pimples, your makeup will sit better, pores will be less noticeable and most of all facials help increase collagen and elastin," she said. "It's really important to be consistent when it comes to skin. It might be pigmentation, scarring, acne - any skin condition it takes time to see a change in your skin, especially when you're looking at your skin everyday."
