The annual Australia Day race-meet provided the goods, with an exciting finish in the headline race and a track record broken.

It was a star-studded field for the race, with a grand total of $2.7 million of prizemoney won across the careers of the eight competing horses.

Short-priced favourite Street Sheik proved to be a class above, claiming the Great Western Cup in a blistering finish and breaking the track record in the process.

The five-year-old gelding was in last place coming around the final straight, but charged home across the final 300 metres to claim victory.

It just pipped Under Oath by less than a length to give Plumpton-based trainer Patrick Payne his second consecutive victory at the Cup.

"Great performance by the horse," winning jockey John Allen said.

"Was at the back end of the field but came home really strong.

"Thanks to the staff at Great Western, a great day and the track's in great condition."

From the Wimmera's contingent, Stawell-based trainers Terry and Karina O'Sullivan were in contention with 2019 Warracknabeal Cup winner Revlis.

Revlis was unable to capture last year's form, finishing in second last.

Horsham jockey Christine Puls finished last on Jumbo Prince.

Stawell-based trainer Deanne Taylor had stable-star Silence the Stars scratch prior to the race.
