Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria's 2020 State Urban Junior Championships will take place at BJ Reither Track off Park Drive across Saturday and Sunday.
The event's John Davies said 60 teams had entered from 40 brigades across Australia, including one from Harvey in Western Australia.
"All the competitors will be under 17, and with the judges, coaches and officials there will be about 1500 people in town for the weekend," he said.
"The competitions will be one, two or four person events, half of them are wet hose competitions using a 38 millimetre hose. They have to do drills as quickly as they possibly can.
"The dry work is done with a larger hose - which is 65 millimetres - and try and achieve their best times. If the competitors here eventually decide to transfer to the senior ranks they already have half the skills that are necessary."
Arjai Johnston will compete in his fourth championships as part of Horsham's team. He said he hoped to be a fully-fledged volunteer one day.
"The one man marshall is probably the most challenging event," he said.
Mr Davies said the event involves one person, four hoses, two branches and a wire piece.
"The hoses are laid out for them and they run in and in an ordered sequence they must undo and reconnect all of the couplings, branches (nozzles) and hydrant. When they are finished all of their work must be within 12 millimetres of being tied," he said.
Mr Davies said this would be the third year Horsham hosted the junior championships after 2012 and 2015.
"In the last two to three weeks a number of people have come up to us and said 'you guys do a great job for Victoria', and that's great recognition for volunteers," he said.
The senior championships will take place at Mooroopna, near Shepparton, on March 28 and 29.
