ENVIRONMENT Protection Authority Victoria has contracted West Wimmera Shire Council to further its remediation works on an illegal waste dump site at Lemon Springs, south of Kaniva.

The council will construct two internal access roads needed to support heavy vehicle and machinery movement during the next phase of remediation.
The roads will also improve ease of vehicle movements in and around the site.
An authority spokesperson said road base material would be sourced from the region's quarries, which would help the area's economy.

The spokesperson said construction works would start soon, once all approvals were received.
The works will take about four weeks, depending on the weather.
The spokesperson said staff would be based in and around Kaniva.
The authority continues to monitor groundwater quality, which shows no sign of contamination.
It is also continuing preparatory procurements works for site remediation
The authority is monitoring security of the site and using a drone to survey it.
The authority has previously said the Lemon Springs property, 15 kilometres south of Kaniva, contains 20 underground dump sites of suspected industrial waste. It was first alerted to the problem in July 2018.
