The fire at the Victoria Hotel in Horsham on Monday night has been found by Country Fire Authority and police investigators to not be suspicious.
A spokesperson for the CFA said investigations found the cause of the blaze was a laundry dryer.
Earlier: A man and his dog were saved from the Victoria Hotel in Horsham on Monday night after a blaze engulfed the rear of the properly.
Horsham Acting Sergeant Steve Gray said five occupants were asleep in the Dimboola Road hotel when the fire broke out at 11pm.
Country Fire Authority members searched the hotel and rescued an occupant and his dog.
Acting Sergeant Gray said the owner was treated for mild smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene.
Authority crews had arrived at 11.03pm to find the hotel's kitchen on fire.
"The damage was significant," Acting Sergeant Gray said.
"Police arrived just after 11pm and the back was burnt to a fair point."
Acting Sergeant Gray said police were unsure how the fire started.
He said crime scene guards were on site.

Horsham police officers and fire investigators would work to determine the cause, he said.
A CFA investigation team, including an arson chemist, was due to arrive from Melbourne late Tuesday morning.
Ten Country Fire Authority vehicles from Murtoa, Horsham, Ballarat City and Dooen tackled the blaze.
The spread of fire was slowed by 11.55pm and it was brought under control by 1.06am.
CFA crews remained on scene for several hours to mop up and prevent flare ups. A stop was issued at 4.24am.
