The league's 12 clubs and governing body AFL Western District agreed on Tuesday night to start the junior and senior competitions on August 1, with 10 junior sides and five senior sides eager to return.

Ararat Storm and the Stawell Warriors were set to enter senior teams in the competition for the first time this year, joining the Horsham Demons in what was formerly known as the Deakin University Female Football League (DUFFL).

All three clubs also have competitive junior sides, as well as the Horsham Saints.

AFL Western District commercial and operations manager Matt Ross said it was a positive to see women's football making its return.

"There is a lot of girls chomping at the bit to play footy and it is pleasing to see," he said.

"But we will be mindful of the restrictions and policies that might be put on us. We want to make sure it is safe for everyone but we are happy be able to give girls a game this year."

Ross floated the idea of northern and southern conferences to reduce travel and accomodate the needs of all clubs.

Cobden, Hamilton Kangaroos, Old Collegians, Portland, South Warrnambool, Terang Mortlake, Timboon Demons and Warrnambool all have teams in the league.

"We will have flexibility with days, playing matches on either Saturday or Sunday or even night matches," Mr Ross said.

"We are willing to be flexible to allow clubs to create those days for themselves."

Junior footballers are allowed to return to full contact training and competitive action from this week, while seniors wait for the state government to ease restrictions.

AFL Western District is expected to release a draw in the coming weeks.
