Western Victoria Female Football League cancelled amid impending stage three

Facilities will close, and outdoor sports will be restricted to activities such as golf, tennis, fishing and boating under tighter restrictions that come into force from midnight on Wednesday.

People are only allowed to participate in those activities with one other person or household member, and at a distance of 1.5 metres at all time.

The impending restrictions prompted AFL Western District to cancel training and competition for any affiliated league or club - including the Western Victoria Female Football League.

The Horsham Demons were hopeful of participating in the junior WVFFL competition before the weekend's stage three announcement, despite missing the first round due to a last-minute fixture change.

Ararat Storm, Stawell Warriors and the Timboon Demons withdrew from the competition late last week, amid a growing number of COVID-19 cases in western Victoria.

Only one game proceeded at the weekend, with Terang Mortlake claiming what could be the only win of the 2020 WVFFL season.

AFL Western District commercial and operations manager Matthew Ross said player's satisfaction levels showed the value in trying to put a season together.

"Thank you for all the tireless hours put in by volunteers across the district in putting on training and matches in what is a rather turbulent period for our community," he said.

"Satisfaction has been evident in our junior participants making the efforts worthwhile."

Speaking after Ararat Storm's withdrawal, coach Isabel Kettle hoped the momentum surrounding female football wouldn't fade.

"The girls that came to training every week, whether they knew there would be a season or not, they still gave their all, which was just really great to see," she said.

"Unfortunately it couldn't go ahead, but I know the girls would have given everything.

"Hopefully we can have heaps of numbers next year, and I'm sure the determination of the girls will be there as well."
