Senior forecaster Miriam Bradbury said a low pressure system moving southwest from inland Australia would push rain southwest with it.
"We will see that develop in the WImmera district in the early hours of Friday," she said.
"Gradually we will see it easing through the early hours of Saturday morning and essentially petering out that afternoon.
"The totals taper off quite significantly the further south we go: Across the northern parts of the Wimmera generally speaking on the order of 8-20 millimetres is quite possible with potential for isolated higher falls reaching 30 millimetres. Anywhere south of Horsham totals are closer to the order of 10 millimetres maximum."
Ms Bradbury said snow was predicted for Victorian peaks 1400 metres and higher in the next few days, ruling out the Grampians receiving another dusting.
