Police are urging residents to take proactive steps to help keep their homes and belongings secure.

Crimes have involved theft of fuel, phones, power tools, cash and credit cards, and household electrical items such as computers or tablets.

Western Region Division Four Investigation, Response, Tasking and Coordination Acting Inspector Brendan Broadbent said Victoria Police would target and detect offenders but there were several things people could do to keep their homes and property secure.

"With people now able to leave their homes across the Wimmera region, it's a timely reminder that there might be opportunities for people to break in," Acting Inspector Broadbent said.

"We each have a role to play when it comes to making our homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods safer.

"It's important to lock windows and doors, even when you're at home, as these are the most common entry point for burglars.

"Reporting as soon as you can also gives police the best opportunity to locate offenders, recover stolen property and keep everyone safe.

"Most importantly, if you're home when someone breaks in always remember that the safety of yourself and others is more important than any possession.

"Find a safe place and call Triple 000."
