The last significant La Nina event was in 2010-11, contributing to Australia's wettest two-year period on record.

The weather pattern reached its peak in January 2011, with a "one-in-200 year" flood hitting the Wimmera.

Incident controllers at the time said the flood eclipsed the Wimmera's 1909 flood - illustrating the historical enormity of the event.

The floods peaked in Horsham on January 18, with up to 45,000 megalitres of water flowing down the Wimmera River in a day.

While it is incredibly unlikely the La Nina of 2020 will cause flooding of a similar vein, we decided to delve into our photo archives for a look back on 2011 - to understand the potential of the incredible weather event and to admire the power of mother nature.
