The event will be run entirely online in December, with live and pre-recorded performances allowing people to tune in from their own backyards.

Event co-ordinator Simon Dandy said in a year with so much turmoil, he hoped the carols could bring a note of positivity to the community.

"It would be easy not to do it - and in a lot of ways, people probably are expecting for it to be called off," he said.

"But we got together and we thought, if there was any year that we have to do carols, it's this year, to spread the message of hope and the Christmas spirit.

"We just felt that for a lot of people, when they go to carols, that's when the Christmas season starts. It would be a shame for people not to have that."

The event will be run on Sunday, December 6.

Carols by Candlelight is normally one of the most well-attended events on the Wimmera calendar, attracting crowds of more than 4,000 people to Sawyer Park's soundshell.

Mr Dandy hoped for a similar crowd - and potentially more - for the online rendition.

"If all goes as planned, I think it will be magnificent," he said.

"We normally get four to five thousand at the sound shell, but with going online, we're technically at unlimited capacity.

"We could have anyone log on and from anywhere, so potentially we have a lot more reach."

Mr Dandy said the organising committee was ready to lean on the expertise of other organisations that had transitioned into the online sphere this year.

"There are people around who have developed that skill set who are happy to help," he said.

"Everyone has been affected, but some of the churches in town in particular, they are doing a similar thing with live services.

"It's certainly going to be a job, but we're ready to take it on.

"We would prefer to be down there of course, but we're keen to make the most of it."
