Stawell SES were called to Splitters Falls track near the Wonderland carpark where a 12-year-old hiker had been bitten on the ankle.

Stawell SES controller Alan Blight said the girl was in good spirits when crews arrived, showing no symptoms of the bite.

He however said her condition could have changed rapidly, and the decision was made to winch her out of the popular walking track.

"We were called to assist Ambulance Victoria and Vic Police staff," Mr Blight said.

"Because of the nature of the snake bite, and it being an unknown type of snake, the decision was made to call a helicopter to winch her out.

"She was transferred to the Horsham hospital for further attention."

Mr Blight said it was another timely warning for people to be cautious of snakes.

"With the warmer weather arriving, people really need to be aware of snakes and take great care during their walks," he said.
