Vinnies' Western Central council president Chris Pye said its small network of volunteers provide practical assistance such as food and fuel vouchers.

"We also provide sponsorships for students to support their education and our reach extends across Horsham, but as far out as Hopetoun, Warracknabeal, Donald and St Arnaud," Mr Pye said.

St Vincent de Paul Society national president Claire Victory said job losses, business closures and reduced working hours have placed many communities under increased financial strain.

"Even without border closures and travel restrictions, many people in our community find Christmas to be a particularly lonely time of year due to social isolation," Ms Victory said.

"Each year, the community provides generously to help Vinnies help people who have fallen on hard times to enjoy something of the Christmas season."

Mr Pye said the impact of the pandemic means this will be a Christmas like no other for many people.

"For people who are forced to ask for the basics, or have to make tough choices, any new costs are a tipping point," he said.

"This is why we encourage people to donate to our annual Christmas appeal."
