ENVIRONMENTAL Protection Authority Victoria has appointed EnviroPacific Services as the principal contractor to carry out remedial works at the illegal waste site in Lemon Springs, south of Kaniva.

The excavation of waste will be taken in stages, with the works beginning in March 2021.
Environmental Protection Authority Project Manager Julian Bull said all waste excavated will be sampled and taken to an appropriately licensed facility for disposal.
"The safety of the community continues to be our top priority," Mr Bull said.

"We plan on maintaining the regular communication we've had with them [the community] as well as a planned community meeting for February 2021 in Kaniva.
"The meeting will give the local community a chance to hear from the EPA, EnviroPacific and stakeholder groups like council, CFA and the water authority about how the siteworks have been progressing and what's to come."
In 2018, Graham Leslie White allegedly buried 50 million litres of chemical waste on a property he owned near Lemon Springs.
Victoria Police and the Environmental Protection Authority have been investigating the case, and have said they will continue to pursue the occupier to pay the cost of the cleaning up fees.

Groundwater sampling was completed at the site in December 2020, with results showing no signs of contamination.
Environmental Protection Authority Victoria said sampling will continue to be conducted regularly throughout the project to monitor any potential contaminants.
