His secret is using the same seeds his mother, Caterina Panozzo, used when she was alive.

"It started with my mum. My mum was a good gardener and she always had tomatoes. They were the original grosse lisse," he said.

"When mum passed away, I kept the seeds. My tomatoes are original, going back many, many years grosse lisses. Every year I've kept the seeds."

Mr Panozzo said keeping the seeds is quite easy.

"You wait for the tomato to get ripe, get the seeds out, wash them, dry them and store them in a glass bottle," he said.

Mr Panozzo's biggest tomato of the season is a whopping 400 grams, which was planted in July last year.

He said it's just about taking care of them which isn't much.

"They're in a good sunny spot, plenty of food, plenty of water and that's about all. When it's really hot, I cover them up," he said.

"Blood and bone, and limestone, plenty of food and plenty of water."

He said his mum just made gardening look so good and everyone loved her tomatoes.

"We love tomatoes. They're a beautiful colour and a healthy food."

Mr Panozzo said the tomatoes tend to be given away to all his family.

"There were so many Panozzo's in the area we'd all just share things around. If we had too many tomatoes, we'd swap them for onions."

But his best tomato will be kept to be reseeded to keep Caterina's seeds going.

"We've had a very, very good crop this year," Ms Panozzo said.
