After an hour, the Edenhope-Apsley export had tripled that goal tally, booting two first-half majors as he pushes for the final spot on the Blues' list.
McDonald was stationed in the forward line and rotated through the ruck as Carlton fell to a 19.11 (125) to a 15.9 (99) loss to St Kilda on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old's last, and only, goal came in August 2019 during Melbourne's 17-point loss against Collingwood.
The delisted Demon racked up 13 disposals on Thursday night and took on a number of ruck contests in an impressive showing.
A host of injuries to Carlton talls could open the door for McDonald.
Levi Casboult, Charlie Curnow and Mitch McGovern are all sidelined, while Harry McKay was forced from the field during the Saints clash after rolling his ankle.
Reigning best and fairest Jacob Weitering also left the field injured.
McDonald appears to be battling with Callum Moore for the final spot on the Blues' list.
MAKING NEWS:
Moore played eight matches over four years with Richmond, before being cut, and was signed by Carlton under the 2020 pre-season supplemental selection period.
He played two games for the Blues and was delisted again at the end of the season.
The pre-season supplemental period closes next Tuesday.
