It was an arm wrestle all day at Coughlin Park but Dimboola came up trumps with some final quarter goals as they held on to win 48 - 45.
Dimboola senior coach Justin Beugelaar said it was an exciting finish and and great to be back on the park.
"I think the last game that we won was against the Saints at home and so to do it again in the first round of the season is really exciting for the players and we are just really looking forward to the rest of the year," he said.
Beugelaar said he was pleased to get the early win, but his Dimboola side still have some work to do.
"We were definitely pleased with the win, having 18 months out of the game was going to make tough but to get the win in the end was pleasing," he said.

"I think that we played to their strengths for three quarters or most of the game.
"They tried to play a turnover-based game and then use their speed on the outside and we played to that a bit.
"But we got it back on our terms and we were able to get on top.
"We just have to make sure that going forward when we play against sides that are quick on the outside we play our game style and get the game back on our terms."
Beugelaar said defensive effort was a big part of the game and that is why just 13 goals were kicked on a perfect day.
OTHER NEWS:
"Defensively both teams were really good and it was a struggle to get it forward and kick a score," he said.
"We think we can build our season on being a defensive minded side, so it was pleasing in that aspect, but everyone just struggled to kick a score."
"In the end, key personal stood up when it mattered. We had had a few guys get on top in the midfield and and gave us some drive and we had Mitchell Jorgensen who kicked a couple for us a was important."
Dimboola have the round two bye and will look to recover for a round three match-up with Nhill while the Horsham Saints will play the Horsham Demons on ANZAC Day.
