Bureau of Meteorology's Christie Johnson said the cooler weather could lead to snow at relatively low altitudes throughout the state.

"With the very cold air coming in we've got the snow level dropping to about 1200 metres today, dropping to about 900 metres later tonight and then early tomorrow morning, behind the next front we've got the snow dropping down to maybe about 700 metres and possibly as far down as 500-600 metres," she said.

"In terms of snow settling on the ground we're looking at above about that 700-800 metre mark."

This could potential lead to snow in the Grampians, with the Pinnacle standing at 720 metres and Mount William at 1167 metres above sea level.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts temperatures in Ararat to reach a maximum of 12C on Friday, May 14, and 11C on Saturday, May 15.
