The Whippets took up the pressure and skills to the favoured Hamilton side in the first quarter. Sam, Jack and Steve B had plenty of the ball through the middle and Ethan and Josh were playing key roles in the backline. The Whippets ended the first quarter down by just one goal with the score 0.1.1 to 1.1.7. It was a great quarter of football to watch from both sides - fair, clean, tough and skillful football.
Hamilton turned it on in the second quarter though kicking six goals three behinds to no score. The Whippets were brave through this quarter but unfortunately were no match for Hamilton. The half-time score was 0.1.1 to 7.4.46.
In the third quarter, the Whippets started to get some play back and players like Mark, Glenn and Jay-Jay started to get their hands on the ball and lay some tackles to put some pressure back onto Hamilton. Ethan was able to kick our first major of the game in the third quarter however Hamilton kicked another 3 goals to extend their lead to 10.4.64 to 1.4.10.
In the fourth quarter, the Whippets were able to get the game on their terms and won the last quarter. Goals came from Rachael who kicked two, while Josh and Steve Coon hit the goalkickers list for the first time. The final score finished Whippets 5.5.35 to Hamilton 13.5.83.
The Uniting Wimmera player of the day was awarded to Sam who may be recovering from leather poisoning today. He received the INTERSPORT Horsham voucher while the Farmhouse Deli and Cafe voucher was awarded to Maree who played well in the backline. Steve B and Ethan were awarded the Coles Meyer gift cards for third and fourth best, Jack received the Superfeast voucher and Jay-Jay was awarded sixth-best for his pressure and tackling throughout the day, exactly what the coach had asked of him.
Congratulations to Hamilton on their back-to-back premierships.
The Wimmera Whippets will be training for both football and netball this week from 4:30 pm. Football will be at Sunnyside Oval and netball at 298 gym.
