The multi-million-dollar project includes 18 high care residential aged care beds complete with en suites, situated around a central courtyard and landscaped gardens next to the existing low care facility at Edenhope District and Memorial Hospital (EDMH).

With 24/7 care available from our team of registered nurses and the advantage of the Edenhope and District Memorial Hospital at our doorstep, Lakeside Living offers families and carers peace of mind."

Based on best practice principles for dementia-specific care, the new unit provides a safe, home-like environment adaptable to individual residents' needs.

Some aspects of this new unit include improving privacy by eliminating the four bed wards, private bathrooms for all residents and making infection control more manageable.

Minister for Health Martin Foley attended the opening on Wednesday and said the addition would greatly benefit the community.

"Incorporating dementia-friendly design such as shared social spaces and a central courtyard will mean residents and their families and create a strong sense of community," he said.

The upgrade also refurbished the facility's common areas, kitchen and activity spaces where residents participate in an active lifestyle program and socialise with their friends, family and the local community.

Delivered by Edenhope and District Memorial Hospital in partnership with the Victorian Health Building Authority, the redevelopment was funded through the State Government's $490 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund (RHIF).

Stages two and three of the project delivered 12 new bedrooms with en suites, additional bedroom renovations, remodelled dining, lounge and kitchen facilities, and a new hairdressing salon and office areas.

"With a brand new facility we hope that we may be able to attract staff, the staffing levels are anticipated to remain the same," Ms McDonnell said.

"We will still have the same number of aged care beds, however we have gone from have 4 residents sharing a room, to each resident having their own room with ensuite."

Edenhope and District Memorial Hospital funded this through a generous community bequest.

"We would like to acknowledge the generous bequest from the Peter Carracher estate. Peter a former Minimay farmer, bequested over $2 million dollars which contributed to building of this 'world class' facility," EDMH Lead Executive Officer, Andrew Saunders said.

"We are extremely grateful to Peter and his family in honour of his generosity we have named the new building of Lakeside Living the Peter Carracher wing."
