WIMMERA businesses will glow with the spirit of hope from Monday to promote Relay for Life.
Businesses will turn purple from Monday to Friday for Paint the Town Purple, the official launch of the Horsham and Districts Relay for Life, in March 2016.
Paint the Town Purple organiser Tami Lane said about 110 businesses would create window displays or decorate their offices to raise awareness for the relay.
“We encourage people to think outside the square – there are so many possibilities,” she said.
“Being school holidays, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get the kids involved in the displays.
“The displays don’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. A little creativity can go a long way.” Mrs Lane said this year marked the fifth Paint the Town Purple event.
“It’s not so much about raising money, it’s more the awareness of the relay,” she said.
“Paint the Town Purple happens in other areas, but it has become synonymous with the Wimmera.
“Other places don’t support it the way we do.
“For people in other towns, Relay for Life is something they go to every year, but they don’t get involved and passionate about it the way we do here.
“We are a unique community – we care a lot about each other.”
Mrs Lane said Paint the Town Purple provided an opportunity to brighten the region while promoting an important message.
“It’s about hope – hope for a cure, and a future without cancer,” she said. Mrs Lane presented The Wimmera Mail-Times with a bunch of flowers made from past relay posters on Thursday.
“We are so grateful to the Mail-Times for its support in helping us raise awareness of Relay for Life and promoting the message of hope,” she said.
The business with the best dressed window will receive a Queensland holiday donated by the Mail-Times.
Mrs Lane said businesses could upload photos of their displays to the Relay for Life Facebook page for people to vote on.
People who ‘like’ the page go into the draw to win one of 2 $50 Caltex Star Cash cards.
