Horsham Crime Investigation Unit detectives recorded more than 30 incidents of copper taken from key rail infrastructure between Buangor and Serviceton during February and March 2024

The thefts caused significant disruptions to rail freight services.

Detectives believe the offenders used 4WD vehicles to access remote areas

A white 4WD Nissan Patrol was sighted by police responding to reports of a signal outage on a railway line near Gerang Gerung on Sunday, March 2, 2024.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, which was seen towing a trailer full of suspected copper wire, but it refused to stop for police and sped away about 4.25am.

Investigations remain ongoing.

The driver of the Mazda, an 80-year-old Nhill woman, died at the scene.

Her passenger, an 85-year-old Nhill man, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries; however, he died on Monday, March 10.

Detectives urge anyone with footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppers.com.au.
