Car club visit town attractions
The Federation of Vintage, Veteran and Classic Car Clubs visited Rainbow’s heritage-listed Yurunga Homestead and Pella Church on August 6.
A total of 46 members from all across Victoria arrived in a convoy of 19 classic vehicles, including Morris, Ford, Holden, Humber, Mercedes, Nissan, Studebaker and Jaguar models.
Secretary-treasurer of the Yurunga Committee, Peter Solly, said the committee members assisted the visitors during their tour.
“We had nine community members assisting with the catering and with guiding through Yurunga,” he said.
“That included four members of the Yurunga Committee and a few other volunteers.”
The group members enjoyed a guided tour and afternoon tea at Yurunga before travelling to Pella with local tourism coordinator Mal Drendel.
Mr Solly explained the homestead’s significance to the visitors: It is a heritage-listed homestead in Rainbow and is owned by Hindmarsh Shire Council.
“Our volunteers have been delegated by council to manage the house, keep it clean, look after the exhibits and open it to the public,” he said.
Visitors came from across Victoria and beyond, including Sydney, Bendigo and Castlemaine.
“They’re a car club and they just like restoring and maintaining their old cars,” Mr Solly said.
“They have tours that they organise to go to various areas and they were based in Horsham for most of the week.”
The Yurunga Committee welcomed the opportunity to share the site’s history.
“We enjoy having people come through that obviously appreciate historical buildings,” Mr Solly said.
“I like to talk about the history of the district, the town, but also the house and the stories of the people that built it and lived in it.”
Mr Solly encouraged more locals to visit this attraction in town.
“It’s a great attraction and we’d love to see them there on a Sunday afternoon or if they’ve got a group, by appointment,” he said.
