Debut Turns to Detour

MAN IN THE CORNER: First game nerves are one thing, but no one expected this.

A fresh face to the Wimmera pulled on the boots for her debut in women’s footy on the weekend, taking the field at Laharum with the Grampians as a stunning backdrop.

But by the second quarter, things took a turn. One unlucky fall and she was down and not getting back up.

The game stopped, the trainer rushed in, and not long after, the familiar sound of sirens rolled in.

Off she went in an ambulance, leaving behind the gum trees and footy banter for flashing lights and morphine.

It might’ve been her first game, but she’s already met more locals than most do in a month- teammates, the trusty trainer, paramedics, doctors, nurses and even a few curious visitors in the hospital waiting room.

From warm welcomes to X-rays, it was a full-blown country introduction with all the trimmings (minus the four quarters).

The good news? She’s smiling through it, leg in a cast and all.

The bad news? Her second game might be a while away.

Still, if making an impression was the goal - consider it kicked straight through the sticks.
