Dumping increase draws extra watch

It's thought the remnants of tyres destroyed in burn-outs being discarded on the outskirts of Horsham are behind a big increase in illegal dumping.

The dumping of tyres has drawn extra surveillance from Horsham Rural City Council (HRCC) after its staff removed 21 tyres from roads on city fringes, particularly in Horsham North.

People caught dumping tyres face fines of up to $5928.

In response, HRCC will increase patrols in the affected areas and is asking the public to report any activity that appears to be suspicious.

Council is also collaborating with local tyre businesses to prevent customers improperly disposing of tyres to avoid having to pay a disposal fee.

Dumped car tyres release harmful chemicals as they break down, and in turn these can leach into the environment and groundwater, potentially poisoning animals and plants.

Discarded tyres are also a fire hazard as tyre fires are notoriously difficult to control and extinguish.

For more information or to report suspicious activity, contact HRCC.

Members of the public can report illegal dumping on public land to EPA Victoria on 1300 372 842.
