Eyes on the finals for Thunder

After getting their first taste in the league last season, and narrowly missing out on the finals, Southern Mallee Thunder's A Grade netball side is ready to step it up a notch this year.

Despite being an offseason merger of Jeparit-Rainbow Storm and Southern Mallee Giants, the Thunder missed out on finals by just a game.

Coach Steph Thompson said there were plenty of positives to take out of the season.

"The first year of Southern Mallee Thunder - coming together as a brand new club was exciting," Thompson said.

"We took a bit to warm up, but the second half of the season, we were super competitive against the top teams and actually beat three and four.

"We had new goaling and defence combinations gelling and played some great netball."

This season, the Thunder are looking to increase their depth and versatility, focusing on fitness to get off to a good start.

"We want to start strong and be connected as a team from Round One," Thompson said.

"Be competitive like we know we can and always enjoy ourselves when it comes to game time.

"But obviously finals is where we want to be at the end of the season."

Thompson said the club has retained all of last season's list, and has picked up Jodie Hayes, a Heather Hatcher medalist, who will be back on court after having her son.

"Jodie plays in the mid-court and it’s exciting to have her back on the court," Thompson said.

As for who will be the biggest competition for this year, Thompson said Horsham and Saints are always good.

"But maybe it’s Thunder's year, though," Thompson said.
