Golf Bowls Blue finish off season well

The Golf Bowls Club rounded off their home and away season in a competitive last round at the Golf Greens last Saturday, with Golf White claiming a victory over their opposite teammates in Golf Blue, but not without an early scare from the underdogs.

Roger Perris will skip his rink in tomorrow's semi-final against Warracknabeal.

It was game on from the start, with Golf Blue holding the lead overall after 8 ends, 2 rinks up and a close score in the other.

Again it was the one side that held up the White victory, with the lunch break after 12 to 14 ends a chance to regroup on all rinks

Golf Blue were well in the contest 4 shots up in a rink, even in the other, but a little down in rink three.

Scores were 46 Golf White, 37 to the Blue’s, thus the banter in the clubrooms at the break wasn’t as loud as usual, with an air of confidence coming from both teams.

Roger Perris, Brian Gunn, Bill Russ and Graeme Clayton set out to show their past good form was present against John Barbetti, Wayne Gove, Ian Bibby and leader Christine Gunn, but found themselves a little down after eight ends, dropping a five at one stage, to be on equal terms at the lunch break.

Both sides were neck and neck, 21 all with five ends to count.

The White’s found the form over those ends to win all five, and go on to record a 9 shot win at 30 shots to 21.

A big improvement from the underdogs, being level with a few to play, whilst White’s were not that impressive against the bottom side, however a win is a win, with 16 ends won on the day.

Golf White were in control in another rink, claiming a big winning margin over Golf Blue, again showing their class as a foursome, to lead the team to a sure thing by day’s end.

Barry Holland, Gary Bellis, Russell Miller and skip Warren Perris showed no mercy against fellow bowlers in Roy Liersch, Alison Fischer, Maurie Parsons and Skip Jim Gibson.

Jumping out early with great team bowls, having a 19 shot lead at the break, thus keeping the White’s in the game overall at that stage.

They upped the pressure for the rest of the game, winning 6 of the last 10 ends played, for a team boosting win 40 shots to 12 shots, sixteen ends won, with a hope the form will continue in the finals.

Golf Blue Skipper Judy Gove had a day out she will not forget, playing her best game for the season, showing her previous skills from the past were well and truly back.

Graeme White led well for his skipper, to be constantly having a chalk mark on his bowl, backed up by second Graeme Clarke, and third Frosty Gunn.

Golf White were under pressure all afternoon, having short bowls most of the day, but not adjusting to any length that was had, with the outcome their own downfall.

Mick Marchment, Bruce Wilson, Shirl Liersch and leader James Thomas had no excuses as to the result, playing their worst game as a team, but most of all being out bowled by all four opposition.

Golf Blue had a four shot buffer at lunch, 15 shots to 11, with Golf White hoping to change that score line.

They picked up eight shots straight after the break to lead by one 17 shots to the Blue’s, 16, but that was the end of the beginning.

Judy and her team showed the form they know they can produce by winning all remaining 8 ends bar one, 18 shots to 3 shots, with Judy constantly picking up the kitty for multiple scores.

Golf White won 10 ends only, with the end score of 34 shots to 20 a fitting result for the Blue side, whilst the selectors may be at crisis point with the finals starting tomorrow.

Final overall score saw Golf White 90 shots to Blue 67.

This was a big improvement by the Blue’s from the first round result, with next season in Division Two promising to be a lot more enjoyable in the lower grade suited for the club and its members.

Well done to Golf Blue on the season that was of a higher standard, but with two wins and a couple of others not going our way in close battles, you played it out to the end, with a top finish.

Next season should be another competitive year for Golf Blue Golf White play semi final 2 against Warracknabeal at the local greens tomorrow, in what will be a challenge they should be up to if they come prepared.

Terry Sanders is back as a second for skipper Mick Marchment, with all other rinks remaining the same.

Home ground advantage by being the ladder leaders will definitely favor the townies, however if the Perris brothers can inspire their team to their maximum potential, and the other rink combine well as a team, a close game will no doubt be enjoyed by any onlookers who wish to watch.

The winners go straight into the seasons grand final, with the losers to play the winner from semi 1, Beulah or Rupanyup.

Good Bowling to all in the finals.
