MP's $1M promise for vital Mecca upgrade
Accessibility and safety are at the forefront of an election promise by Member for Mallee, Dr Anne Webster.

The MP announced a $1 million investment on Tuesday, March 11, to upgrade the public amenities at the historic 'The Mecca' in Rainbow, making them safer and more accessible.
The funding will cover most of the estimated $1.15 million project, ensuring the facilities meet Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) standards.
Dr Webster said the upgrades were based on community feedback.
"We have often been told by residents that accessing the female toilets can be unnerving, particularly at night, due to the passageway and the fact that there is a blind corner prior to entering the toilets," she said.
"Whilst the passage will remain in the proposed design it will be opened up and will allow a lot more natural light during the day and improved lighting will be installed for nighttime use."
The upgrade will replace outdated facilities with modern, inclusive amenities designed to improve accessibility and safety for all users.
The project will add a new DDA-compliant all-abilities facility in the former council customer service building with direct access from Federal Street, refurbish male and female public amenities to improve accessibility and safety and construct a compliant access ramp leading to the Mecca supper and meeting rooms.
Hindmarsh Shire Council mayor Ron Ismay, chief executive Monica Revell, local councillors and Rainbow's citizen of the year, Allira Roberts, joined Dr Webster at the announcement.
Cr Ismay praised the funding, emphasising the importance of inclusive community spaces.
"The current toilets are an embarrassment to the community and shire," he said.
"Upgrade is desperately needed."
Rainbow Town Committee spokesperson Allira Roberts praised the funding announcement.
"[The] new disability toilets will make it easier for more people to volunteer for community groups that use the Mecca," she said.
The town's tourism industry continues to expand with the development of the Llew Schilling Silo project, an exciting addition to the Silo Art Trail.
This project will allow visitors to explore the inside of the silo from its mid-section and top, featuring both internal and external art displays.
"Upgraded toilets in the town tie in the Llew Schilling silo project, as the town can expect more visitors," Cr Rosie Barker said.
