The change applies to an arterial road managed by the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).

The reduction follows a serious crash in July involving a hay truck and a school bus on this stretch of road.

The incident prompted strong concern within the local community and led to a safety review by the Department of Transport and Planning.

Yarriambiack Shire Council acknowledged the distress caused by the crash and said the department had responded to community concerns.

“The recent serious crash involving a hay truck and school bus that occurred at Stawell Warracknabeal Road was distressing for members of the local community,” CEO Tammy Smith said.

“The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) acknowledged the concerns regarding safety at this stretch of road.”

After assessing the section of roadway, DTP determined that risks existed at the curves and the railway crossing.

The existing 60km/h zone on the eastern side of the crossing has now been extended to include the rail crossing itself and the adjoining curves, and the new limits have been installed.

DPT’s executive director of Barwon South West and Grampians, Michael Bailey, said the new limit is an essential step in reducing road trauma.

“Managing speed limits is key to bringing down the number of lives lost on our roads, which is why we’ve introduced a new, 60km/h speed limit on Stawell-Warracknabeal Road at Minyip,” he said.

“When setting speed limits, we carefully balance keeping everyone safe on our roads and keeping people moving around their communities.”

DTP’s safety review found that extending the 60km/h zone to incorporate the crossing and curves would reduce the risks identified in the area.

The new 60km/h speed zone is now fully operational.
