The river is used for many recreational activities such as fishing, boating and jet skiing alongside the paddle boats that operate on one section.

Recently, community concerns have been voiced over motorboat drivers allegedly being under the influence of alcohol.

Horsham police Senior Sergeant Eddie Malpas said local police had taken action to address the behaviour.

“Anti-social behaviour and reckless actions won’t be tolerated on the Wimmera River," Snr Sgt Malpass said.

“Boat and jet ski operators can expect to be tested for drugs and alcohol while vessels will be checked to ensure they meet mandatory safety requirements.

“That means carrying the required safety equipment, wearing a lifejacket and staying sober if you’re in charge of a vessel."

Snr Sgt Malpas said they wanted everyone to enjoy the river but they needed to do it safely.

“Alcohol and water don’t mix – it leads to poor decisions and slower reaction times, putting lives at risk," he said.

“The community can expect to see water police here regularly, working alongside local officers to detect and prevent dangerous behaviour on the water."

If you witness dangerous or illegal behaviour, report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestopersvic.com.au.
