At a recent club meeting, Horsham Rural City Pipe Band members Gordon McKenry and Michael Stewart were honoured for their decades of dedication.

Pipe Major Michael Stewart was awarded Life Membership in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the band. Mr Stewart, who first picked up the bagpipes 35 years ago, has played for most of his life and continues to master and share the craft.

"At this stage of my playing, I have moved into focusing on the expression of the music, and I am enjoying that," he said.

After returning to solo competition last year, Mr Stewart recently placed third in the State Championships C-Grade level; a strong result given the calibre of competition across Victoria.

Highly regarded by fellow members as an exceptional tutor and mentor, Mr Stewart extended an invitation to anyone interested in learning the bagpipes or drums.

"Tuition is available to new members and is free," he said.

"If you're not ready to try the bagpipes, we are also looking for drummers - you're welcome to give it a go!"

Mr Stewart was also awarded a 20-year badge for service shared with fellow long-term member Gordon McKenry.

Mr McKenry was inspired by his father, a bagpiper who played in Horsham, Geelong, and with the Air Force during parades.

He now plays his father's treasured bagpipes and described the experience as a great honour.

"I grew up listening to them, so the music was ingrained in me, I suppose," he said.

Having served two terms (six years) as President of the Band, Mr McKenry praised the community and friendships the band fosters, adding that he hopes the tradition will continue through his son, who has shown an interest in the pipes.

Also recognised on the night was Catherine Harris, who received the Ron Abbott award for Best Bandsperson of the Year.

The award held special meaning for Ms Harris, as her mother was the inaugural recipient in 2024.

The band also welcomed a new executive team woth Cameron Whelan as president, Kim Brooks (vice president), Liz Minne (secretary), Catherine Harris (treasurer), and Daniel Hendry, Neil Copley, and Kaye Vincent on the general committee.

Founded in 1923, the Horsham Rural City Pipe Band continues to promote the love of pipe band music and Highland dress in the Wimmera region.

The band meets at Jubilee Hall, Roberts Street, Horsham, and is always ready to welcome new members.
