Students bring teen life to stage
Horsham College students are set to showcase the ups and downs of teenage life at Horsham Town Hall next week, from August 28-30, with their production of '13 The Musical'.

Director Emily Friedrichsen said the story captures the emotions and challenges of turning 13 in a modern world.
“The highlight is the fact that it’s actually all about them,” she said.
“It’s about being a teenager and all the stresses and anxieties and the things that go through the kids’ heads when they turn 13.”
The musical, which first appeared on Broadway and launched Ariana Grande’s career, has been expanded at Horsham College to include over 50 students from Years 7 to 12.
Around 30 students will take the stage, while others contribute backstage, designing sets and costumes through applied learning classes.
One of the leads, Ella Lloyd, who is playing as Patrice in the show, said her favourite part is one of the songs.
“My favourite part of the show is the ‘Good Enough’ song, as it’s a turning moment for Patrice when she realises herself against the main character,” she said.
Ms Friedrichsen said while the themes of friendship, popularity and family pressure are timeless, the show also reflects today’s unique challenges.
“The stresses that we went through 20 years ago are different to the kids today, as they’ve been exposed to social media and all sorts of things,” she said.
“It brings to light about name-calling and the rumour mill, that manipulation between friend groups.
“It really sort of smacks you in the face, because this shouldn’t be the culture that’s created.”
Year 11 student Henry Overman, playing the main character ‘Evan Goldman’ in the show, loves doing musicals.
“I choose the lead, as I love and enjoy doing musicals and stuff,” he said.
“This is just a fun role to play.
“People should look forward to the show, as it’s different and unique.”
To support young people, Horsham College has partnered with local youth mental health organisations, including Headspace and Uniting Care, who will run exhibits and activities in the Town Hall foyer during the show.
Ms Friedrichsen encouraged the community to turn out for a fun and meaningful night.
“Just come and support our kids,” she said.
“It’s a great family night out, and I think the grade fives to year 10s in the audience will really resonate with it.”
