The initiative, led by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits regular walking, or alternative active transport to and from school, can provide for long-term wellbeing.

Warracknabeal Primary School, Warracknabeal Special Developmental School and St Mary's Primary School students and staff were joined by Leading Senior Constable Peter Taylor from Warracknabeal Police Station as they marked the day with a walk from Anzac Park to the Education Precinct.

Pedestrian Council of Australia CEO Harold Scruby said children under 10 must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.

“The best form of physical activity for all Australians is walking regularly," he said.

"Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

"We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day."
