Warrack women wrap up winter champs in style

The Warracknabeal Golf Club women’s winter competition concluded in fine fashion on Wednesday June 18, with the final round of the club championships sponsored by W.B. Gardiner and Sons and 54-hole nett event sponsored by Elders drawing a field of 21 players and plenty of excitement.

The women also contested a daily stroke event sponsored by the club.

Casey Phelan claimed the prestigious open champion title in division one with a gross score of 266, while Wendy Hewitt was the runner-up on 268, hot on Casey’s tail.

The runner-up prize was sponsored by Sue Sanford.

In division two, Kerry Oulton was named champion, emerging victorious with a gross score of 294, ahead of Shirley Liersch on 302, who was the runner-up.

The club thanks Sue Sanford once again for sponsoring the runner-up prize.   

Kerry Oulton shone on the course, claiming victory in the daily stroke event sponsored by the golf club, with a strong nett score of 71, narrowly edging out runner-up Julie Koschitzke, who carded 74 nett, on a countback from Julie Bayles.

In the 54-hole nett standings, Kerry Oulton’s consistency over the tournament secured her the division two title with a total nett score of 213, while Casey Phelan dominated division one, finishing with an impressive 230 nett.

In the day’s novelty prizes, the following nearest-the-pin winners were celebrated: Julie Boyles on the 5th (Warrack Hot Bread), Karen Germano on the 7th (Power & Bennett) and Casey Phelan on the 13th (Rural Northwest Health), as well as the third shot on the 9th (Sue Krause award).

Judi Armstrong won the Warracknabeal Dental Clinic nine-out with 21 points.

Shirley Liersch claimed the nine-in with 18 points.

Casey Phelan also proved lucky off the course, taking home the Palace Hotel spinning wheel raffle prize.

Nick Germano and Rach won the spinning wheel.

Looking ahead, next week’s fixture will see a spirited captain v president sStableford match-up, with Leonie Atkin and Julie Bayles on office duty.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s life members' board event was won by Vicki Hinkley and Ross Laycock with a score of 70 2/8.
