Mr Forrest made his announcement in front of colleagues and supporters in the National Party tent at Wimmera Machinery Field Days today.
He said he wanted to make his health his priority after 20 years in national politics.
National Party leader Warren Truss spoke about Mr Forrest's achievements, foremost of which was the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline.
Party members Andrew Broad, former Victorian Farmers Federation president, and Buloke Shire Mayor Reid Mather, have indicated they will stand for pre-selection for the seat of Mallee.
Cr Mather estimated up to 10 party members might be in the running.
Voters will go to the polls on September 14.
