Northern Grampians Shire Council infrastructure and environment director Sanjay Manivasagasivam said small excavators would arrive at the site tomorrow.
"All demolition and cleaning works will be completed within two weeks from then," he said.
The extension was built in the 1960s.
Its foundations were damaged beyond repair after floods in September 2010 and January 2011.
Large cracks in the extension's interior walls were also noted during a council inspection in January last year.
Mr Manivasagasivam said the damaged extension would be knocked down to protect the adjacent original shire hall building, a significant heritage structure built in 1866.
"Council wants to preserve the historical building, which will be used as the council chamber," he said.
Until September, the extension was home to council's local laws, emergency management and waste management departments.
Staff were then transferred to Stawell Town Hall, where the majority of the council’s Stawell workforce is based.
Northern Grampians Shire Council employs about 180 staff across both its Stawell and St Arnaud offices.
“We have had engineers monitoring the building from January to make sure its condition did not pose any safety issues for staff,” Mr Manivasagasivam said.
There were no plans to replace the structure.
“We are looking into shared work spaces at the town hall at the moment,” he said. More than 50 staff share the space.
Mr Manivasagasivam said people could call Lyle Tune at the council offi ces on 5358 8700 for more information.
