The groups plan to host an eight-week exhibition starting in August and also want to publish a book early next year.
Gallery director Adam Harding said the groups wanted to talk to members of the public who had photos, diaries or other items of memorabilia that could help tell the story of the region’s involvement in the war.
Society spokesman John Francis said gallery and historical society staff would be available to view items throughout the week at the society rooms at 33 Pynsent Street, Horsham between 10am and 4pm.
“We are encouraging relatives to bring in items for recording or display in the exhibition later in the year,” he said.
“We have facilities on site that can be used to scan and register photos.
“The historical society is also compiling a list of service people from the region using honour boards, memorials and newspaper articles.”
Mr Francis said visitors would be able to view the list.
“There are some people for whom we only have a surname and initial,” he said.
“We would be grateful for any information that could help us identify them.”
Mr Francis said people could call him on 5382 5210 for more information.
