SWIFTS finally got off to a fast start in a big win against Natimuk United at the weekend.
The Baggies have been notoriously slow out of the gates in the past few seasons, but showed no signs of sluggishness against the Rams.
It was the club’s emerging young players that gave them the most reason to smile.
Zach Salmi, Josh Newton, Ryan Folkes and Rory Jones were among those praised by coach Ben Martin after the win.
Scott Carey and Nick Pickering were also among the best for the Baggies.
On Natimuk United’s side, it was the consistent Ash Pekin who was named best afield.
It was the first game for the club since the merger between Natimuk and the Horsham RSL Diggers earlier this year.
Key forward Damien Kilpatrick stood up and booted three goals for the Rams on a day when the team struggled to score at times.
The final score was Swifts 16.17 (113) defeating Natimuk 8.12 (60).
Martin said the Baggies were hopeful their better start to the season would set the team up for finals success.
“I spoke to the boys before the game and went through all of the processes that we’ve gone through pre-season,” he said.
“I told them that at the end of the day, none of it counts for anything if we don’t go out and win.
“The boys came out firing early and I think that set us up for the rest of the game.”
