DIMBOOLA’S hopes of back-to-back premierships are over after a 29-point loss to Minyip-Murtoa at Dimboola Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
The Burras were clinical in their disposal of the reigning premier up to three-quarter-time, leading by a whopping 81 points.
But a nine-goal-to-one final term from the Roos added some respectability to the scoreboard, with the Burras claiming a 16.13 (109) to 12.8 (80) triumph.
The last time a Wimmera league premier failed to make the finals the following year was in 2003, with the Warrack Eagles missing the finals series after winning the 2002 premiership.
Minyip-Murtoa coach Scott Arnold said he was thrilled with his side’s performance.
“It was a great win,” he said.
“It was a really physical game early and the first half was probably as physical of a game as we had played all year.
“We were running out of men at half-time – we virtually had no one on the bench. We threw everything at them in the third quarter.”
The Burras’ seven-goal-to-zero third term set up an unassailable lead despite Jack Boschen and Darcy Harrison warming the bench after suffering head knocks.
Clinton Midgley kicked five of his eight goals in the quarter, while Dimboola had only three in total before its final quarter burst.
Arnold also praised the performances of Kade Petering, Justin Garth and Dan Smith, while Blake Grant chipped in with three goals.
The win means Minyip-Murtoa will now play Ararat, which replaced Dimboola in fifth place, in an elimination final on Sunday.
Dimboola forward Lachie Exell, five goals, and Ash Clugston, four, both wrapped up outstanding individual seasons in front of goal.
But the loss was the Roos’ third to Minyip-Murtoa for the season, and their ninth to a top-four side from 10 attempts.
Michael Pohlner, Hamish Exell and Ryan Bell were also named among the Roos’ better performers.
