The rising star was nominated for Gymnastics Victoria junior gymnast of the year but lost to Scott Brooks.
Brooks is 17, while Irwin, 14, has several more years of eligibility for the award.
He was one of only three nominees statewide for the junior gymnast of the year.
Irwin said he was pleased to be nominated even though he didn’t win.
‘‘I didn’t get the win but it was a really good night,’’ he said.
‘‘All of the gym sports got together, and awards were presented for all of the sports.
‘‘It was the first Gymnastics Victoria night that I’ve been to and it was really enjoyable.’’
Irwin recently attended a national development camp in Canberra and emerged as the top-ranked prospect in the country for his age group.
He is a member of Gymnastics Australia’s Team Future program for the best young gymnasts in the country.
He was highlighted by Gymnastics Victoria Men’s High Performance program manager and head coach Greg Corsiglia last year as a potential international and Olympic-level athlete.
