Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, GWMWater and the Victorian Environmental Water Holder staff discussed the issue and the region’s environmental water forecast with Wimmera community groups and council representatives earlier this month.
Staff outlined the water situation and discussed options for community events, recreation and other uses if the dry period continued.
Dimboola Ski Club president Mark Gaulke said he was shocked to learn the region’s water reserves were so low.
He said many people thought because there were no water restrictions in force, there was plenty of water available.
“Early planning means a lot to the club. We try to be proactive and look after our section of the river because we don’t want to lose it,” he said.
“With the CMA and GWMWater letting us know what might lay ahead, we can plan and prepare.
“I prefer to know the worst scenario rather than the best scenario, and we can all work together with the water that is available.”
Mr Gaulke said the Wimmera River was crucial for the Dimboola community.
“It is life for the town and it means a lot to a lot of people,” he said.
“We are trying to look after the river the best we can, so getting an insight into the current water situation is invaluable for our future plans.”
Mr Gaulke said the ski club, which had been going for 50 years, relied on volunteers to keep its club area at Picnic Bend in good condition.
He said the club was investigating ways to address erosion on the banks and sought advice from an ecosystem expert, who recommended planting some native grasses.
“Before we get all our volunteers to plant the grasses, we want to make sure the plants will survive if they don’t get the environmental water releases we usually receive, so from that perspective the forum was invaluable as well,” he said.
Wimmera CMA chief executive David Brennan said the authority asked groups at the forum for ideas on retaining waterway community and environmental values.
Mr Brennan said people could call the authority on 53821544 or email wcma@wcma.vic.gov.au to provide feedback or for more information.
