About 6pm on Saturday, Horsham Police observed a car travelling east at speeds in excess of 160km/h near Wail.
Police identified the car as carrying false plates but lost sight of the vehicle.
The vehicle was observed by police again a short time later near Pimpinio.
After following the car over a rail crossing police observed the occupant, a 29-year-old man, exit the vehicle and attempt to flee.
Following a short foot chase the man was apprehended.
A search of his person and vehicle by police allegedly recovered amounts of the drugs ice and GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate).
Checks revealed the man also had an outstanding warrant.
The man was taken to Wimmera Base Hospital after complaining of shortness of breath but was discharged by hospital staff without further treatment.
He has been remanded in police custody to face Horsham Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
