Ms Sturgess said her first week had shown her the Horsham community cared for each other.
“It is a privilege to lead an organisation with that level of support from the community, and also internal support,” she said.
“Also the board impressed me, because ultimately they are volunteers.
“I am amazed by their passion.
“The Horsham community is a community that cares for each other and supports organisations.”
With the National Disability Insurance Scheme being rolled out, Ms Sturgess said there were a number of major changes Wimmera Uniting Care would have to negotiate in the next year.
“Getting ready for the NDIS is a priority,” she said.
“We also want to work better in earlier years. I am thinking about young people, and really young people, to improve our work in that area.
“There are so many areas where we can build on the work we have done and there is a great platform to work from, and that is inspiring for a new chief executive.
“I look forward to working with the community.”
Ms Sturgess has experience in the private sector, but said she moved across to the public sector because she is committed to helping people.
“I will bring the ability to see the organisation through change,” she said.
“That is a skill I hope to add to the value of Wimmera Uniting Care, and a passion for working in the community sector.
“I am very passionate and committed to helping people.”
