Mark John Curtis, 44, pleaded guilty in Horsham Magistrate's Court yesterday to 16 mostly violence-related offences.
Magistrate Richard Pithouse convicted and jailed Curtis for 18 months, with a non-parole period of six months.
He noted Curtis had already served 90 days on remand.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Guin Cleminson told the court that Curtis visited a house at 11.45pm on September 29 last year.
Curtis approached a man in the house and yelled while punching the man's face and head.
He continued to hit the man and swore at him as the man fell.
Sgt Cleminson said the man went to hospital with a bleeding nose and facial injuries.
She also told the court that Curtis pushed his former partner out of a doorway on February 15 this year.
Sgt Cleminson further said that police had attended the house of Curtis and his former partner for domestic violence incidents between February and April.
The woman was granted an intervention order against Curtis.
The order was in force when Curtis yelled at his former partner and called her obscene names at 2am on May 5. He grabbed her throat, punched her jaw and pushed her to the ground.
Curtis then pushed the woman onto a bed and held a knife to her throat, saying he would cut her throat.
Sgt Cleminson also told the court that Curtis and a male co-accused, whose matter will be heard separately, broke into a McPherson Street, Horsham, property in June.
Curtis and the man stole building equipment and then attended a Ballarat secondhand dealer.
The co-accused sold a stolen chainsaw to the dealer for $100.
Curtis stayed outside the shop because he had been banned from entering due to past incidents.
Sgt Cleminson also told the court that Curtis was driving in Horsham on July 4, when police stopped him and found he had no alcohol interlock device as per his licence conditions.
She further said that Curtis told his former partner on July 26 that her throat would be slit or she would be attacked with a baseball bat.
Curtis also threatened to set the woman's house on fire.
Police arrested Curtis and found cannabis, a cannabis and tobacco mix and dexamphetamines in his motel room.
Mr Pithouse said it really was Curtis's last chance and if he re-offended when released he would be looking at a long time in jail.
He reinstated two suspended sentences which Curtis had breached, to be served concurrently with his new sentence. Mr Pithouse also ordered Curtis to pay $100 compensation and to forfeit his drugs.
