It was a goal in the last minute of the game which lifted Kalkee to a 33-32 win.
Coach Tracee McAuliffe was very nervous in the closing stage of the game.
“It was amazing,” she said.
“We had huge injuries during the week and we weren’t sure we’d have a full eight.
“It was awesome; to come away with the win was great.”
The game was tight all of the way through with one goal margin after the first and second quarter.
It was the Kees with a 10-9 lead at quarter time but halfway through the match Sourthern Mallee led 20-19.
Kalkee got on top in the third quarter to open up a four goal lead at the final break.
It would take something special from the Giants to fight back in the last quarter and the side lifted just like it needed to.
Halfway through the last quarter the scores were level again.
The Giants managed to edge in front but last minute goals gave the Kees the lead again.
The side then managed to hold onto the lead during a nervous last passage of play to claim the 2016 premiership.
“It was down to who wanted to chase the ball and accuracy,” McAuliffe said.
“Like I said earlier in the week it would come down to accuracy.
“Luckily for us it was us. I’m very proud of the girls and the team effort.”
Kiana Marshman, Southern Mallee, was adjudged best on court in the contest.
