Horsham Golf Club junior liaison officer Elaine Breuer said it was the first step into competitive golf for beginners against other junior players.
“It is not necessary to hold a handicap as the rookie events are run by using the “Callaway” handicap system,” she said.
It is the second year the club had held the rookie tournament with seven juniors participating this year.
Midland Golf Club’s Tom York was the winner of the boys under-16 competition with a net score of 37 ahead of James York who scored 39.
Alex Cannard from Sanctuary Lake Golf Club won the under-11 boys with a net score of of 40, one ahead of Lucas McDonald.
Horsham Golf Club’s Izabella McIntyre took out the under-11 girls with a net score of 43.5.
Breuer said this was one of many Stuart Appleby Junior Golf tournaments.
“Most of them are held in Melbourne with only a couple of country ones,” she said.
“The winners get invited to compete in a finals series played in Melbourne in January.”
Horsham Golf Club has been a My Golf centre for the past two years and has worked hard to try to bring younger players into the game.
“It’s difficult in the country because there are so many sports to choose from,” Breuer said.
“We’ve had a couple of good things lately with 30 children out here during school holiday programs and we had Lutheran school students come out with 17 students.
“Once we get them out here we’ve then got to have something for them to come back to.”
The club invites the young golfers to come out with families on Sunday mornings from 9.15am.
“We run nine hole junior family sessions,” Breuer said.
“They can come out and play without much cost even without being a member.”
A new six week My Golf program will tee off on Sunday, October 30, with those interested required to register online.
The club will run one hour sessions for three different age groups; ages 5-7, 8-10 and 11-12.
Older players who have already participated in My Golf are invited to take part in afternoon sessions and should register their interest by contacting Breuer on 0428 824 846 or at the Pro Shop.
