MEN
The Horsham Hornets recorded yet another victory at home against the Colac Kookas on Saturday night.
It was a tight, fast-paced and physical game for the Hornets who started strong out of the gates.
The Kookas kept up with the Hornets until the third quarter saw the side run home.
The Hornets accelerated and extended its lead with its teamwork and skill to cement its 91-59 win.
Horsham’s Tim Pickert was on fire in his usual form, with 26 points for the side.
Matt Lovel was another big contributor with 13 points while James Hallett left it all on the court and accumulated 12 points.
Hornets coach Cam Bruce said it was a great team performance.
“We put the pressure on Colac in the third quarter and came out with a lot of energy,” he said.
“We turned a few screws and forced a few turnovers.
“Tim got hot and put the points on the board. We can do that pretty quickly once we turn them over so it was good to see.”
Bruce said Mitch Martin was strong across the court and the team’s juniors stepped up to the plate.
“They are just getting better and better each week," he said.
“That is what we are looking to get out of them, we just want them to keep improving.
“You never know when a player could get injured and we need those players to step up.
“It is crucial to make them more experienced.”
Bruce said the team is now looking to Sunday’s challenge against the Mt Gambier Lakers.
“We just need to come together and bring the same defensive intensity we have had in the last couple of games,” he said.
“We know we can score pretty easily when we run out and put pressure on them.
“Hopefully we can do the same tomorrow.”
LADIES
Horsham Lady Hornets had a challenging game but kept in front and delivered another win.
The side was consistent and refused to let the Colac Kookas through, despite its best efforts.
The Hornets battled it out and finished the game, 76-53.
Sophie Alexander was the Hornets top scorer, putting up 21 points.
Caitlin Story was strong across the board with 16 points and strong defensive pressure.
Ema Iredell was another strong defender with key intercepts to keep the team afloat.
Lady Hornets coach Gareth Hiscock said he was confident his team’s performance would get them over the line.
“I was pretty comfortable that we were in control of the game for the whole of the game and we were able to give our girls plenty of minutes,” he said.
“Caitlin Story was given the opportunity to play a heap of minutes and she responded with a really good game.
“Sophie was good again. Ema Iredell was in foul trouble earlier but when she was out there she played well.”
Hiscock said it was still a challenging game.
“We always seem to have a tough match up against the Colac Kookas,” he said.
“They seem to lose games we expect them to win and then they come up really well against teams like us.”
Hiscock said he was keeping Sunday’s game in mind.
“That is why why I gave the bench plenty of minutes,” he said.
“I just wanted to keep them all fresh in the legs since we have a very important game tomorrow.”
The Lady Hornets will take on the Mt Gambier Lakers at 12pm while the men will play at 2pm, at the Horsham Basketball Stadium.
