Horsham's Tom Garner wins VACC apprentice award

HORSHAM apprentice Tom Gardner has been recognised for his work in the mechanics industry.

Mr Gardner is a third-year apprentice at Traction Ag in Horsham and through the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce, he was named outstanding third year apprentice for the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE.

He said it was a good feeling to be recognised.

“I received a letter in the mail telling me I had won,” he said.

“It was a surprise – it was completely out of the blue.”

Mr Gardner has been working at Traction Ag for about three years.

His work includes testing and fixing engines.

“On Wednesday, I spent the day diagnosing a tractor, trying to work out why it wasn’t driving or moving,” he said.

Mr Gardner said he always wanted to work to be a mechanic.

“I’ve always had a mechanical background, I grew up with motorbikes and cars and it was always something I wanted to do,” he said.

“I like the diversity of the work – we work on lots of different vehicles from motorbikes to tractors.”

As well as working at the Horsham business, Mr Gardner attends trade school at the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE in Swan Hill.
