CYCLISTS and drivers must safety share the roads.
Bike lanes provide extra safety to cyclists, but what happens if there is no bike lane?
Cyclists must then ride on the road and drivers need to know how to share the road safely.
Horsham Senior Sergeant Brendan Broadbent said cars must give cyclists a metre clearance when they pass.
“It comes back to being safe while driving,” he said.
“It’s important for cars to do the right thing, but it’s also important for bike riders to ensure they ride two abreast and aren’t all over the road.
“Each group must respect each other and just be patient.”
Senior Sergeant Broadbent said cars could not overtake a bike if it meant they had to cross double lines.
“Drivers can’t go on or over double lines at any time,” he said.
“The lines are there because it is unsafe to cross to the other side of the road.
“It all comes down to common sense and being safe while passing.”
Sergeant Broadbent said it was also important that cyclists wore helmets at all times.
