More than 100,000 Victorians have participated in this year’s program, which encourages 30 minutes of physical activity a day. A host of well-known Victorians have participated in this year’s campaign including Channel Nine’s Peter Hitchener and Jo Hall, AFLW’s Daisy Pearce, Katie Brennan and Emma Kearney, AFL’s Jake Stringer, Super Netball’s Madi Robinson and table tennis champ Milly Tapper.
Here are some tips for Wimmera locals keen to keep up the good habits beyond April 30:
- Set small achievable goals to begin with
- Create a detailed weekly plan of when and where to get active
- Keep an activity diary to track your goals
- Choose something fun and enjoyable
- Recruit a family member, friend or work colleague to be active with you
- Schedule regular activity ‘appointments’ with them
- If you’re a morning exerciser place your runners and active gear next to your bed to put on first thing when you wake up
- Take a spare pair of runners to work so you can go for walks during breaks or meetings
- Keep active gear in your car boot
- If all doesn’t go to plan, forgive yourself and pick up where you left off

IN ABOUT two weeks’ time, I will join more than 100,000 people around Australia in the annual Mother’s Day Classic fun run and walk. The event is now in its 20th year and raises money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Since 1994, the foundation has given $140 million to nearly 500 Australian-based research projects investigating ways to defeat this cancer. All of this money is raised by the public.
The Mother’s Day Classic is the biggest donor to the foundation having raised more than $30 million. It’s quite exceptional. It’s organised by extraordinary people for extraordinary people.
We all know families impacted by this insidious disease – one in eight women and one in 700 men will develop it.
So for the men and women out there who need our help, please take the opportunity to either donate or participate in this fun event on the May 14. There are events across the state. Their website is a great place to start: www.mothersdayclassic.com.au

Celebrating women
I URGE local people to celebrate the achievements of exceptional business women by nominating them for the 2017 Telstra Business Women’s Awards.
The Telstra Business Women’s Awards, now in their 23rd year, recognise and reward the courage, leadership and creativity of Australia’s business women and play a critical role in raising the profile of women in business.
There are many inspirational women from a diverse range of working backgrounds in the Lowan electorate who are achieving great things. The awards provide a fabulous opportunity to recognise these women.
Anyone can nominate a business woman they admire, with entries open until June 15 across five award categories.
State and Territory Award winners will be announced at gala events later this year, with the Victorian Awards taking place on October 10. The National Awards, including the announcement of the Telstra Business Woman of the Year will take place at a gala dinner in Sydney on December 1.
To nominate go to www.telstrabusinesswomensawards.com/nominate/
